MCP Server Comparison: Top 10 Head-to-Head
We scored 25,632 MCP servers and agent tools in the AgentRank index across five signals. Here are the top 10 — ranked, compared, and broken down signal by signal. These are the tools that set the benchmark for the rest of the ecosystem.
Top 10 MCP servers — all signals
Every tool scored on the same five signals: freshness, issue health, inbound dependents, stars, and contributors. Sorted by composite AgentRank score.

Close% = issue close rate (closed ÷ total). Deps = inbound dependents (repos that import this). Data from March 2026 crawl.
Signal breakdown
Freshness (25% of score)
All 10 tools had commits within the last 30 days. This isn't coincidental — active maintenance is the single strongest predictor of overall quality, and the top 10 all have it. The tightest cluster: six tools committed within the last two weeks, including mongodb-js/mongodb-mcp-server, qdrant/mcp-server-qdrant, and semgrep/semgrep-mcp (all March 13–14).
Issue health (25% of score)
The top-scoring tool for issue health is motherduckdb/mcp-server-motherduck at 94% close rate. The lowest in the top 10 is kubernetes-sigs/mcp-k8s at 79% — still exceptional for a project with the scale and activity of the Kubernetes ecosystem. The average across the full index is 43%. Everything in the top 10 is at least 79%.
Inbound dependents (25% of score)
motherduckdb/mcp-server-motherduck leads at 67 downstream repos, followed by kubernetes-sigs/mcp-k8s at 52 and mongodb-js/mongodb-mcp-server at 54. High dependent counts signal real production adoption — someone has committed to using this in their stack. The full index average is under 3 dependents per tool.
Contributors (10% of score)
kubernetes-sigs/mcp-k8s leads with 34 contributors. benborla/mcp-server-mysql follows with 27 — remarkable for a community (non-vendor) project. The minimum in the top 10 is 14 (aquasecurity/trivy-mcp). The full index average is under 3 contributors per repo.
Stars (15% of score)
Stars matter least in the score formula — and the top 10 demonstrate why. The highest-scoring tool (motherduckdb, 88.66) has the fewest stars (439). The highest-starred tool (benborla/mcp-server-mysql, 1,335) ranks 6th. Stars measure historical attention. The other four signals measure current quality.
What the data says
Stars vs score: the divergence is real
The most-starred tool in the top 10 is benborla/mcp-server-mysql at 1,335 stars — but it ranks 6th by score. The lowest-starred tool is motherduckdb/mcp-server-motherduck at 439 stars — and it scores highest. Stars lag. The score leads.
Official servers dominate
Eight of the top 10 are official servers from the tool's vendor or maintaining organization. The two exceptions (benborla/mcp-server-mysql and kubernetes-sigs/mcp-k8s) both have 20+ contributors. Official backing and high contributor counts are the two paths to consistent top-10 placement.
Security is the surprise category
Four of the top 10 are security tools. Six months ago security was barely represented in the top 50. The fastest-growing category in the ecosystem is also producing the highest-quality servers.
TypeScript and Go dominate; Python third
Four TypeScript or Go servers each, two Python. Java, Ruby, and Rust don't appear in the top 10. TypeScript and Go have better tooling for producing typed, maintainable MCP servers — and it shows in the quality signals.
Individual profiles
Best-in-class freshness and issue health. Fewer stars than peers but the quality signals dominate.
Official MongoDB server. High contributor count and active development make this extremely trustworthy.
Best security server in the index. Official Snyk backing with strong freshness and issue health.
Official HashiCorp server. Go implementation, strong team, critical infrastructure use case.
Official Redis Labs server. Natural language interface for the full Redis data structure suite.
Community server with the star count of an official one. 27 contributors is exceptional for a non-vendor project.
Official Kubernetes SIG project. Highest contributor count in the top 10. Kubernetes-native tooling.
Official Qdrant server. Most-downloaded vector database MCP in the index. Excellent freshness.
Official Aqua Security server for the dominant open-source container scanner.
Official Semgrep server. 3,000+ rules available. Best-in-class for code security review workflows.
