MCP Server Comparison: Top 10 Head-to-Head

We scored 25,638 MCP servers and agent tools in the AgentRank index across five signals. Here are the March 2026 top 10 — ranked, compared, and broken down signal by signal. The leaderboard reshuffled significantly since February: Unity tools now dominate the top 4, and two SDK projects cracked the top 7 by dependent count alone.

Top 10 MCP servers — all signals

Every tool scored on the same five signals: freshness, issue health, inbound dependents, stars, and contributors. Sorted by composite AgentRank score.

Close% = issue close rate (closed ÷ total). Deps = inbound dependents (repos that import this). Data from March 18, 2026 crawl. 25,638 repositories indexed.

Signal breakdown

Freshness (25% of score)

All 10 tools had commits within the last 12 days. The two most recent commits — both on March 17 — are PrefectHQ/fastmcp and samanhappy/mcphub. Active maintenance at this level is not typical: the full index median is 47 days since last commit. Everything in the top 10 is in the top 5% of the freshness signal.

Issue health (25% of score)

zcaceres/markdownify-mcp is the standout at 100% close rate — zero open issues. Pimzino/spec-workflow-mcp follows at 98%. The average across the full 25,638-repo index is 43%. The minimum in the top 10 is 84% (PrefectHQ/fastmcp) — still twice the index average, and expected for a SDK receiving a high volume of community issues.

Inbound dependents (25% of score)

PrefectHQ/fastmcp leads at 7,718 downstream repos — by far the highest dependent count in the top 10. mark3labs/mcp-go follows with 2,938. Both are SDKs: tools that other repos build on top of. Official application servers like laravel/boost score 1,032 dependents. The full index average is under 3 dependents per tool.

Contributors (10% of score)

PrefectHQ/fastmcp leads with 208 contributors. laravel/boost follows with 76. The minimum in the top 10 is 9 (zcaceres/markdownify-mcp), which compensates by having a perfect issue close rate. The full index average is under 3 contributors per repo.

Stars (15% of score)

Stars matter least in the score formula — and the spread here illustrates why. microsoft/playwright-mcp has 29,150 stars and ranks 10th. CoplayDev/unity-mcp leads with 7,003 stars — half as many as Playwright, but scores 4.44 points higher. Freshness, issue health, and dependents collectively outweigh raw star counts.

What the data says

Game Dev owns the top 4

Unity-related tools hold two of the top four spots — CoplayDev/unity-mcp at #1 (98.67) and CoderGamester/mcp-unity at #4 (96.26). Neither appeared in the top 100 six months ago. The Unity MCP ecosystem is the fastest-growing segment in the index.

SDKs outscore servers

Two SDK projects make the top 10: mark3labs/mcp-go (#5, 2,938 dependents) and PrefectHQ/fastmcp (#7, 7,718 dependents). The dependent signal rewards things the ecosystem actually builds on top of — and nothing beats a widely-used SDK for that.

Stars vs score: the gap widened

microsoft/playwright-mcp has the most stars at 29,150 — but ranks 10th by score. CoplayDev/unity-mcp scores 98.67 with 7,003 stars. High freshness, near-perfect issue close rates, and dependent counts separate the top from the rest — not star counts.

TypeScript dominates; C# is the surprise

Five TypeScript servers, two C# (both Unity), two Python, one PHP. C# wasn't in the top 100 a year ago — Unity's MCP adoption has been faster than any other ecosystem in the index.
